Life Drawing for Beginners & Beyond
(Part 1 and / or Part 2)
A new life short life drawing course. Over the first 4 weeks (Part 1 | weeks 1-4) complete beginners will gain an understanding of the human figure in terms of basic geometric shapes, the major masses of the body and the bony landmarks of the skeleton.
Then over the next 4 week (Part 2 | Weeks 5-8), this course will teach you three essential areas of competent figure drawing. In the first two weeks you will learn to draw a sustained pose from life. In week three a portrait study; concluding in week four with a class specifically devoted to drawing hands and feet.
Week 1: We will employ short poses introducing beginners to life drawing and how basic geometric shapes and the figure are perceived within perspectival space.
Week 2: Your tutor will demonstrate to students how to break the figure down into simplified directional lines. We will also introduce the skeleton in more detail and the bony landmarks of the human figure.
Week 3: We will look at how we might build on more simplified directional lines in moving towards more subtle contours that began to describe the convexed musculature of the human figure.
Week 4: Students will be introduced to basic shading. This will include gaining an understanding of the roll of the shadows turning point (terminator) to describe form and volume.
Continuing to Part 2 for continuing and new students
Week 5: Students will learn the preliminary skills in drawing a sustained pose from life over two lessons. We will look at describing the weight of the pose; initially breaking the figure down into directional angular lines in order to establish proportion, then introducing convexed contours to describe muscular form, as well as studying the major masses and bony landmarks of the skeleton.
Week 6: While continuing to refine proportion and gain further knowledge of the skeleton, students will learn how to render the fall of light on the model along with a basic knowledge of some of the muscle groups of the figure.
Week 7: Portraiture – in this week we will look in more detail at how to conceptualize the structure of the human head. Students will learn the fundamental proportions of the head and how it can be related to basic geometric forms.
Week 8: Drawing hands and feet – students will gain some fundamental skills that make drawing hands and feet easy! Learn how to conceive of these forms in relation to basic geometric forms and the substructure of the skeleton.
Suitable for anyone from enthusiastic beginners to more experienced artists. Beginners are encouraged to attend Part 1, while more experienced artists can refresh their skills in Part 1 or skip to Part 2.
